Functional Training
Functional training is a real buzz term in the fitness industry, but what does it really mean?
A functional exercise is a movement that is performed in your daily life. This will be different for a lot of people. For instance, a golfer will perform quite different movements to a cyclist. But there are standard movement patterns that, as human beings, we all perform. Examples would be squatting to pick up something heavy from the floor, or pushing/pulling a heavy door open. Functional training involves training these movements, not the individual muscles (there’s way too many of them!).
Everyone should be performing functional training as the foundation of their exercise plan. Exercises that make up a functional training session are also known as ‘compound’ because they activate groups of muscles.
